About Us
We are the SSAGO group for Newcastle University and Northumbria University, Newcastle. Kickstart or continue your Scouting or Guiding adventures with us!
Our club
We are for anyone who is or wants to be involved in Scouting or Guiding and is studying higher education in the Toon! You may come to every social, one or two socials a year, or just talk to us about volunteering in the city.
Everyone is welcome even if you have never been involved before. We run & attend weekly socials, normally on Thursday nights, plus regional and national activities on occasion. In the past these have included a national Secret Santa in pubs around the country, day hikes, climbing, camping, bowling, and a whole lot more!
If you want to volunteer with a local group we can help you find a suitable group, support you with relevant training and adventurous activity permits (climbing, nights away, etc.). We can also support you through the Top Awards (e.g. Queen’s Scout Award) and Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award, etc.
We cover the whole of Newcastle upon Tyne, so if you're studying at Newcastle University, Northumbria University, Newcastle College's University Centre, or anywhere else, please do get it touch!

Our members
We currently have 33 active members.
Our current chair is Fiona Judd.
Our mascots
We have 6 and a half mascots.
We have 3 main mascots who are present at most of our events. Our stealable mascot is Tim the Giraffe (he/him, pictured on the right) named after our former founding president. Our un-stealable mascot is Leo the Lion (he/him, pictured in the middle), who can be found sporting a Newcastle University jumper.
We also have another un-stealable mascot, Sally the Seahorse (she/her, pictured on the left); who’s so important that she got her club necker before anyone else! She was our stealable mascot up until Christmas 2024, when she was retired due to old age and the inability to cope with the trauma of being stolen at LOTRR.
Also pictured is Armstrong, the mascot for SSAGOES to Space Rally, which we are hosting in Autumn 2025! He can be seen flying in his spaceship.
The half mascot is Bjørn the Bear (he/him) who is looked after jointly with DUSAGG, and represents Viking Rally which we hosted alongside DUSAGG in November 2021! He can be found flaunting a SSAGO coloured shield and viking helmet! Now that Viking Rally is over, he's of historical significance, so can't be stolen.
We also have Baloo (unstealable) , also known as Stor Bjørn, who is the Djungelskog bear (they/them, pictured at the back) for all those cuddling needs! Next up is Bagheera (unstealable) (they/them, pictured at the bottom); Baloo (unstealable) needs somewhere to rest their legs occasionally after all! These mascots do not attend events often due to being very large in size… so tend to live in the society stores guarding our equipment.
